Learn about your adult stem cells and how they can be used to treat a variety of ailments, injuries and diseases.

A Mesenchymal Adult Stem Cells

“Mesenchymal” Stem Cells

With respect to stem cell treatment it is helpful to first understand what stem cells are and the purpose they serve within our body. A stem cell in general terms is any cell that can both replicate and differentiate. This means that a stem cell by definition can not only multiply, it can also turn into different types of tissues. And while there are different types of adult stem cells in our body, “Mesenchymal” Adult Stem Cells are the the type of stem cells that our physicians are using to enhance plastic surgery procedurestreat joint conditions and injuries, and provide other treatments for certain conditions and diseases as an alternative to invasive surgical procedures such as hip and knee replacement or fusing spinal Vertebrae.

Where do Mesenchymal Stem Cells come from and how do they help?

Mesenchymal Stem Cells are found in blood, bone marrow, and body fat; the “mesodermal” areas of our body. Most stem cell treatment centers around the world collect mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow. However, the advanced systems we use at CSN Florida here in Jacksonville allow our stem cell surgeons to collect large quantities of mesenchymal stem cells from a patients own unwanted body fat; “adipose”, (or fat derived) stem cells.  Adult mesenchymal stem cells collected from a patient’s own body fat can be safely harvest under local anesthesia and are very abundant. Fat derived mesenchymal stem cells are often 2500 times the quantities over those derived from bone marrow. And our research shows this to be very important, as stem cell treatment success and favorable outcomes appear to be directly related to the quantity of adult stem cells used at the site of treatment.

Remembering that Stem Cells have the ability to regenerate and differentiate, mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to help form new mesenchymal stem cells such as those that make up cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, nerves, fat, muscle, blood vessels and even certain internal organs.

The Mesenchymal Stem Cells’ ability to form cartilage and bone make stem cell treatments, (while still in the research stages) a very attractive alternative in the treatment of degenerative orthopedic conditions and the possibility of joint replacement. Mesenchymal Stem Cells’ ability to form new fat cells can enhance a variety of cosmetic surgical procedures, and their ability to form new blood vessels and smooth muscle makes them potentially useful in the treatment of Peyronies disease, impotence and certain forms of erectile dysfunction. These are but a few of the conditions we are studying and treating with mesenchymal stem cells her in Jacksonville at CSN Florida.

Under our national IRB we have collected anecdotal and experimental evidence that stem cell therapy is effective in healing and in regeneration in general. Stem cells are much like our body’s own internal maintenance department. Stem cells actually respond to the distress calls that are broadcasted by damaged cells. And replace and regenerate the damaged tissue. Stem cell treatments simply expedite this naturally occurring function of our body by helping 1000’s more stem cells rapidly reach the damaged tissue and begin their work.

Your Initial Consultation

If you feel that you may be a candidate for stem cell treatments, schedule a free consultation using the form to the right or by calling (904) 399-0905.

At your consultation, you will meet personally with one of our stem cell physicians who will discuss the details of your condition or injury. The doctor will answer any questions you may have about stem cell treatment, determine if you are likely to benefit from stem cell treatments, and what results you should expect should you decide to receive stem cell treatments. If you are a candidate for stem cell treatment, a date will be scheduled for your treatment.

The Day of Your Stem Cell Treatment

The diagram below outlines the stem cell treatment process. From a patient’s point of view, stem cell treatment is painless and performed under local anesthesia. First, a small amount of your unwanted body fat is collected with micro-liposuction. Then you relax while our stem cell surgical team prepares SVF, “Stromal Vascular Fraction”. SVF is a mononuclear cell line (predominantly autologous mesenchymal stem cells), macrophage cells, endothelial cells, red blood cells, and important growth factors that facilitate the stem cell treatment process and promote their activity. This process of harvesting adult stem cells from body fat allows for the collection of 2500 times more than can be collected from bone marrow.

The final step of the procedure involves deployment of the SVF. Deployment is based on your treatment and may be performed via injection through veins, arteries or into spinal fluid. SVF may also be injected subcutaneously, (the layer of skin directly below the surface of your skin), or directly into joints or organs. Each of these are considered minimally invasive and again, any pain is mitigated by local anesthesia.

Recovering From Stem Cell Treatment

Typically, recovering from stem cell treatment amounts to little more than waiting for the local anesthesia to wear off. Your doctor will again speak with you about what to expect as far as results and ask that you be disciplined about follow up visits as all stem cell treatments and results must be documented and shared in the CSN national IRB database for research purposes.

If you feel stem cell treatments may be an alternative you would like to consider, schedule a consultation using the form to the right or by calling (904) 399-0905.
